Stray Voltage Testing

Stray voltage (or stray electricity), refers to electrical current flowing between two points where it is not wanted. It is a particular issue on farms, and in particular dairy farms as cows are up to 20 times more sensitive to stray voltage than people.  Unlike a farmer wearing rubber boots, a dairy cow has no insulation from the wet environment of manure, mud and water. Cows also receive more current that people.

The effects of stray voltage
Depending on the voltage level, stray voltage can severely affect the well-being of dairy cows, and consequently dairy production.

  • Milk losses can exceed 15%
  • Milking time can be prolonged
  • Milk quality can be affected due to elevated somatic cell counts
  • High levels of manure can be left in the dairy shed
  • Dairy cows can be more difficult to handle due to higher stress on the animals
